An interesting fact about BOTOX: Botulinum toxin, the main ingredient in BOTOX, was first used by ophthalmologist Dr. Alan Scott in 1980 to treat strabismus (eye misalignment or cross-eyes). During the research for this treatment, scientists discovered that botulinum toxin also reduced the glabellar lines (the 11s) in monkeys. That’s because the toxin blocks the release of a chemical that causes muscles to contract.
In 1991, Allergan bought the rights to market botulinum toxin, changed the name to BOTOX, and altered the formulation. In 2002, BOTOX Cosmetic was approved by the FDA to treat glabellar lines, and its popularity soon soared.
Dr. Eric W. Lothes at Liberty Ophthalmology has been administering botulinum toxin for ophthalmic applications since 1990, and he now uses BOTOX Cosmetic for aesthetic purposes.
Discomfort from BOTOX injections is usually minimal and brief. Most patients who receive BOTOX® treatment at Liberty Ophthalmology are in and out of the office in approximately 15 minutes, with no downtime. Results take four to seven days and last up to four months.
